Why AcroDance?

Over the past decade we've seen a trend in contemporary choreography that includes acrobatics as part of traditional dance. This trend no longer seems to be just a fad but rather an evolution of the dance world we were used to seeing. Because of this, we've had a lot of interest from Pegasus families about Acro and last season we did two mini sessions in the Spring.

This year we really wanted to offer our families something more than just impressive looking tricks. We looked high and low, spoke to a lot of teachers in the Acro field, and discussed with other program directors to find the best program for our community. But, we also needed to find an instructor we felt had the background, expertise, and understood Pegasus, our students, and our vision.

Well, we succeeded! We found Acrobatique AcroDance Syllabus and Pegasus alumni Katelyn Good. It was a match made in AcroDance Heaven!!
So what is AcroDance and why should dancers consider adding this into their training?

  • AcroDance provides dancers with techniques to improve strength and flexibility training to help all their dance and also to prevent many common dance injuries. While all our dance programs take students through strength and flexibility exercises, AcroDance will take this training to the next level.
  • We chose the Acrobatique AcroDance Syllabus because it is a well researched and proven program that offers slow, safe progression from beginner to advanced levels. Everyone starts at the beginning and must progress through each level.
  • This syllabus was designed specifically for dancers to add to their artistry. It is different from Gymnastics which focuses primarily on athleticism.
  • AcroDance has softer, more lyrical looking lines, with the emphasis being on lengthening 'through' the tricks and holding balances with interesting variations. The dancers will dance into and out of tricks which are meant to blend seamlessly with the dance steps, providing an extra flair and excitement into dance choreography.
  • Big tricks are a part of AcroDance, but beautiful technique and injury prevention are equally, if not more important! Big tricks are achieved over many years by strengthening and conditioning the body in a healthy and functional manner.

Meet the Instructor: Katelyn Good

Katelyn has been dancing since she was three years old and her passion and dedication towards the art form has only grown through her years of training. As a younger dancer Katelyn danced competitively at Alyona Dance School before transitioning to Pegasus. At Alyona's she trained in Acro among other dance styles. Katelyn also trained at East York Gymnastics Club for a few years while at Alyona's. As a Pegasus Dance Studios alumni she has trained in RAD ballet, Modern, Jazz, Lyrical and Contemporary. Katelyn graduated from Ryerson University’s School of Performance Dance Program 2016 with a BFA degree. There she studied under well-established Modern, Jazz and Ballet artists. At Ryerson Katelyn danced in a production of work by James Kudelka and also choreographed and performed her own piece on the Ryerson theatre stage as well as performing in many Ryerson Choreographic Works shows. At her home studio Pegasus Dance Studios, Katelyn was assistant choreographer and class teacher during Pegasus’ first summer camp production of Alice in Wonderland, was Dance Captain for three years for the Pegasus Performance Team, and has assistant taught ballet and instructed classes at Pegasus for a number of years. Katelyn is currently a student teacher in Janice Pomer’s modern dance classes and will be working with Janice Pomer in the Toronto Public Schools through an OAC grant as an emerging artist under Janice’s mentorship teaching dance in schools. Katelyn always found Pegasus to be her home with its caring and supportive environment, she hopes to continue this as a teacher now and share her love for dance with every one of her students.
