Tap Programs

Tap teaches the understanding of the feet as musical instruments. Students are exposed to a high quality of technical instruction based on Jazz music’s call and response method.

 

Beginner Tap

Entry Level Technique, once a week program

Days: Friday 4:30-5:15

Description: A class designed for older students who are new to tap and are looking to gain the basics in this unique dance form. This class will explore the complex relationship between using the Tap shoe as a percussion instrument and negotiating the body with the feet and the music. Music theory and rhythm work are a strong focus in this class as well as developing choreography and improvisation abilities.

Elementary Tap 1

Entry Level Technique, once a week program

Days:  Wednesday 6:15-7:00

Description: Elementary Tap 1 explores the relationship between the body and the feet as well as the feet to the music. Working with the Tap shoes as a percussion instrument provides in depth understanding of rhythms and musical theory. Call and response, improv, and clapping rhythms are all a part of the musical and movement development of the Tap style.

Elementary Tap 2

Entry Level Technique, once a week program

Days: Wednesday 5:30-6:15

Description: At the Elementary Tap 2 level students begin to explore more complex rhythmical work alongside intricate foot work. Playing with balance, turns and jumps, students develop strong movement skills as well as strong musical skills. Students learn to isolate each part of the foot to make unique sounds with the Tap shoes.

Senior Tap 1

Technique Focus Class, once a week program

Days: Not offered in 2011/12

Description: Senior Tap 1 introduces intricate and advanced foot work. Students work towards detailed rhythmical and movement jumps and turns while incorporating syncopated rhythms with each other and through clapping rhythms. Senior Tap 1 dancers discover some of the historical Tap dances and steps created by such legends as Bill Robinson, the Nicholas Brothers and many, many others.

Senior Tap 2

Technique Focus Class, once a week program

Previous Tap training required

Days: Tuesday 7:00-8:00

Description: Senior Tap 2 continues the work of the previous levels in building strong rhythmical and movement abilities. At this level students develop techniques to produce 5, 6 and 7 part steps using all different parts of the Tap shoes and feet to facilitate intricate patterns and rhythms. Working with different styles from the diverse history of Tap dance, students explore performance dynamics and the relationship between the music and them as a musician as well as a dancer.

Senior Tap 3

Previous Tap training required

Days: Tuesday 8:00-9:00

Description: At the Senior Tap 3 level, students are working with complex rhythmical patterns utilizing syncopation and as well as various different types of sounds produced by the feet and the hands. Senior Tap 3 develops strong improve skills as well as a strong ability to work with the call and response method characteristic of the Jazz music style.

Senior Tap 4

Previous Tap training required

Days:  Tuesday 6:00-7:00

Description: Senior Tap 4 is the highest level of Tap offered at Pegasus. This class develops strong dancers in the technical and performance skills required for the Tap style. Students will work with intricate rhythmical patterns and movements, complex musical theories and develop strong improve and call and response skills. 

Ages: 14 yrs, & up
