How We Started
Pegasus Dance and Art Centre was founded in 1986, by the mother and daughter team of Lynda Johnson and Jane Davis-Munro. Classes were first held in Ms. Johnson's basement and were primarily, what is now, the renowned Childhood Expressions a Pre-School Arts Program. As the centre grew, and more classes were added, Pegasus eventually needed more space and moved to a store front studio at Greenwood and Queen St. Ms. Davis-Munro taught Ballet, Jazz and Creative Movement upstairs and Ms. Johnson taught children and adult Art classes in the basement studio, all the while continuing to build on the repertoire for their Childhood Expressions program. Pegasus soon expanded again and started hiring teachers to expand the Jazz, Tap and Modern dance programs.
In 1992, due to lack of space, Pegasus moved to its present location behind Kimbourne U.C. at Coxwell and Danforth. The studio slowly took over more space and, from originally occupying only two rooms, now has three professional dance studios, an art studio, one fully equipped Pilates studio, a mat room, offices, change rooms, a small dance wear boutique and waiting rooms.
In 1996 Lynda Johnson retired from teaching at Pegasus. She continues her career as a painter and will always be, a strong presence at Pegasus.
Jane Davis-Munro continues as Director of the school, which is no small task these days. Pegasus Children's Dance Centre is now one of the largest dance schools in East Toronto. With a full schedule of Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Modern, Hip Hop and Art classes running in three studios every week, Pegasus has earned its reputation for quality arts education without losing its community and family feel. Ms. Davis-Munro prides herself on making dance a positive experience for all children and to ensure that all of her teachers share her philosophy of providing an atmosphere where children can explore, create, express and develop their inborn creative spirit.
In 1998 Lara Munro and Sacha Karlewicz opened Physical Harmony Pilates Studios in the same building as Pegasus. The small studio grew quickly over the next five years as many parents from Pegasus and outside clients came weekly for their classes.
In 2003 Pegasus took over the management of Physical Harmony to provide an environment in which clients and instructors could create health and harmony through Pilates, fitness and body work.
In 2004 the name Pegasus Children’s Dance Centre was changed to Pegasus Studios to reflect the senior and pre-professional dance programs, the evolving art program and the adult Pilates programs.
In 2009, Briar Munro, the daughter of owner Jane, began operating her personal training business out of the Pegasus home as well.
Pegasus continues to maintain its focus on developing and nurturing all its dancers, from the very youngest on up, physically, artistically and musically.
